How To Amp Up Your Archways
We are currently working on a super fun, top secret commercial space that you can all enjoy! One of our favorite interior finds are arched walkways. And after walking through the space, we knew it was screaming for some to be added. We find that the smallest architectural details can pack a huge punch and add a ton of character to a home or space. Since working on this space, we've had nothing but archways on the mind. So today, we're sharing a step-by-step guide for creating beautiful archways to your existing squared off hallways!

Step One: Get Your Measurements
Measure the current opening of your hallway, taking note of the depth near both corners. Figure out the block measurements (these are the wood pieces that will make the framing rock solid) by subtracting the drywall thickness and plywood thickness from the depth of the doorway.
Step Two: Make Your Arch
Trim a piece of plywood to match the width of the entry. Take note of how far down you want the arch to sit from the original wall and mark that center point with a pencil. Cut your shape using a circle jig and a router. This will get you the perfect curve and makes two identical arches in one go.
Step Three: Secure It
Cut two support blocks (one for each corner of the threshold) using 2-by-4s. Drill them into place and attach your half-moon sheets of plywood on either side. Fill in the gap between the two planks with a few more 2-by-4 blocks to ensure it’s secure. This will also give your drywall something to adhere to underneath.

Step Four: Finishing Touches
Use a knife to cut the drywall so it matches the shape of your wood arches. (Pro Tip: It’s helpful to make a stencil of your plywood cutouts first so you can get a pretty similar shape out of the drywall.) Mount the drywall to the threshold using drywall screws, and apply corner beads to the edges to get a sharp finish. Cover any seams with paper joint tape. Begin to layer on the dry wall mud. You may need to apply several layers, allowing each coat to dry for 24 hours and sanding in between. Remove excess dry wall dust with a damp sponge or wash cloth. Once everything is even and dry, apply paint of your choosing. Finally, stand back and admire your fresh curves.
