How To Plan And Prep For Gardening Season

Y'all we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Springtime is quickly approaching and that means we get to do what we do best, GARDEN!!! We are so excited to get outside into our gardens to harvest all the fruits, veggies and flowers you can imagine. If the pandemic has shown us anything, it's that we are so grateful for our home and time spent outdoors in our gardens. Last year, everyone was gardening up a storm, partially because it's one of the only things we can do right now but also because gardening is equally fun and rewarding! In order to get the most our of your home garden this spring and summer, you'll have to do some prep work. See how we are prepping our gardens right now to gear up for the warmer weather!

If you are planning on growing your produce from the seeds, you will want to get those going ASAP. Luckily, our friends at Le Fleur Farms are here to help! There you can find seed kits that include starter seeds, peat moss growing media, bio friendly peat pots, and our step-by-step instruction manual. They offer various herbs, tomato, squash, and melon kits. We are already planting our seeds in the biodegradable pots and storing them in a sunny area of the house until the weather is nice enough for them to be transferred to the garden. By then the seeds will be sprouting, making them ready for the garden! Pro Tip: keep the mini pots on a large baking pan that way the excess water doesn't make a big mess in your home.

Over the last few years, we have really gotten into "keyhole gardening". It's great for people with small yards, big yards, pets, beginners or seasoned gardeners. Basically we're saying everyone would love a keyhole garden! It is a stand alone structure that holds your produce. But what makes it special is the shape and how it thrives. It lives off of the nutrients in your food waste. The keyhole shape allows for a chute where you dispose of your compostable waste, and over time as the waste breaks down, the nutrients run off into the surrounding soil to feed the roots of your produce. So there is no need to add non organic fertilizer to your produce. We have already started adding our food waste to the chute in our keyhole garden so that in a few weeks when we add fresh soil and our seeds, the compost is primed and ready to feed our freshly planted garden.

We also like to add cage-like structures to our keyhole garden that way viney produce like cucumbers, melons, and tomatoes have some where to climb. This way the vines are working their way up the cages instead of creating a tangled mess on the floor of your garden.

We're so excited for the upcoming spring season and to be able to share the fruits and veggies of our labor with all of you! We urge you to not look at gardening as a chore, but rather a way to connect with your home and nature. If any of you do decide to start your own garden along with us, please let us know by either tagging us in a photo or shooting us a message on Instagram at @valeriewheelerinteriors!
