Rug Placement 101
One of our most asked questions we receive in the DM's is how to pick the proper rug size for your space. Luckily for you, we're here to help! We are going to give our designer tips for picking the perfect rug to compliment any room. From home offices to dinning rooms, we have you covered!
When picking a rug for your living room, you obviously have to take the overall size of the room into account. A rug should act as an anchor for your seating arrangement. While it doesn’t necessarily have to fill the whole room, picking a rug that is too small will make the overall room look smaller. Place at least the front two legs of your sofa and main chairs on the rug. Be sure to leave at least a 1-foot border between your rug and the walls.
The rules for choosing a rug for a living room apply to a smaller seating area. You want to make sure at least the two front legs are anchored on the rug. In this particular room, we were working with swivel chairs so all the hardware was on the rug.
Remember, your large pieces of seating furniture should be placed around the rug, not on top. This will create a feeling of openness in your living space!
A rug can fully change your dinning space. But choosing the best rug for such a high traffic space can be tricky. Choose a rug that extends at least 2’ on each side of your table, so there’s room to pull out chairs. Most tables need a rug that’s at least 8’ wide. Keep in mind that if your dining table is expandable, you should choose a rug that will still fit beneath the table when it’s extended. For those with a round table, you can use a rectangular rug but the rules for leaving space for chairs still apply. We also love to use a round rug to compliment the curves of the table. Also, when choosing a rug for an area that can get a little messy, it is important to pay attention to pile. We like to opt for a lower pile for a dinning space which will make for easier clean-up.
When choosing the right rug for your home office, the general rule of thumb is that your area rug should be one or two feet shorter than the shortest wall in the room. Most importantly, you want to make sure that the area rug is large enough to contain your entire desk and task chair.
