Holiday Gift Guide for the Home Decorator
The Christmas Elves were busy working their magic this weekend. My flocked Christmas tree from Wayfair arrived last week and can I just say how freaking gorgeous it is?! I couldn't wait to get this beauty up. I'm only 5'2" so I was a bit nervous to put a 9 foot tree together solo, but it was actually surprisingly easy to pop into place. If you follow me on Instagram you might of heard that I am participating in my first every Christmas Home Tour. Its so crazy getting the house fully decorated before Thanksgiving!! I thought for sure my family would think I've officially lost mind but it actually has the opposite effect. I'm officially the coolest Mom ever for decorating the house before any one else. The kids have been running around in their Christmas sweaters and watching Home Alone all weekend!! I love it!! With all the Holiday cheer going on around here, I wanted to share my latest Holiday Home picks. Perfect for the home decorator on your list, or maybe yourself;) I know I have bought a thing or two for me this year. If your not already signed up, LiketoKnow.it is another great way to stay up to date on all the holiday sales this year. ORC Week 6 Hallelujah
Welcome to Week 6 of the One Room Challenge! Today would have been the final reveal but due to recent natural disasters in so many states leading up to the ORC, many participants have had to endure unusual circumstances that have impacted their projects. In the spirit of being able to create a stunning space in a friendly, non competitive environment, Linda of Calling it Home has graciously granted everyone an extra week to reveal our designs. And thank heavens she did, cause this chick needs all the extra time she can get!

ORC Week 5 Mail Man I love you...
Mail man I hate you. Yup that pretty much sums up Week 5 of the One Room Challenge. We have been at a stand still this week waiting for the last of the deliveries to come in order to finish the bathroom. The vanity and sconces has arrived, which I thought were the only missing pieces until I finally had an AHA moment and realized I needed just one more stinking roll of London Rose wallpaper. Guess where the London Rose wallpaper actually ships from??? Surprise, surprise London. As in Europe. As in there is a 4 week lead before it actually makes it over to America. I might of justtttt made it had I realized this the first week of the challenge, but truth be told I have been such a scatter brain trying to wrap up this bathroom along with design clients, that it just slipped my mind. I tend to put my personal to buy list off until the last minute so theres really no one else to blame but myself, but GAHHHHHHHH the wallpaper is the main design feature! Couldn't I of forgotten to order the toilet paper holder instead? So since I have no pretties to share this week, I am going to leave you with a super simple, yet super necessary guide on how to make sure this mistake never happens to you.
Week 4 One Room Challenge... Burn Baby Burn
Ok so we are officially a month into the One Room Challenge and I'm feeling pretty confident. The drywall is back up, the new floors are down and the toilet is back in place. Everything I ordered has arrived (minus the vanity) so all we have left to do is wallpaper, style and shoot. Sounds simple right??? I was hoping to have a DIY tutorial on the acrylic frames I was talking about Week 3... but after pricing out the cost of ordering bolts, a large acrylic sheet and the necessary supplies to make the frames I realized it would be cheaper after all to just order a kit. There have been two major changes to the design plans which I think might be a blessing in disguise. We nixed the marble penny tile for the flooring for one main reason... we still had hardwood floors leftover from the kitchen renovation. Sometimes you just have to work with what you got. Here is a picture of the floors recently installed in our kitchen. AKA the happiest day of my life. You can read more about our new kitchen here.
How to Work from Home with Kids
Today's post is one that has been weighing heavy on my mind lately. Mostly because I am still figuring things out when it comes to working from home with kids. When I started my own business I did so for two reasons…
One Week Challenge Week 3 Demo
Hellooooo week 3. I really should call it weekend 3 because thats the only time we can actually get any projects done around here. So last Sunday was our official bathroom demo day. And when I say demo I mean everything got ripped out of the bathroom and thrown into the garage. There nothing like opening the garage to a stinky toilet chilling next to the kid's bikes. But I told my husband to get to work and he delivered... so Im trying not to complain too much. The bathroom leak has also been solved so hallelujah. A small screw was lodged neatly into the drain pipe (aka the septic) from the upstairs bathrooms. It was covered in caulk to seal the leak so my best guess is the fire melted the caulk or whatever sealant was used, causing a slow drip to come out of the screw every time we flushed or showered. Since we like to make things extra complicated we tore out all of the surrounding drywall, to make sure we got rid of any bad smells that might linger. Now that the drain pipe has been replaced we can drywall, wallpaper, lay new floor, put the toilet back and then install the new vanity. Can we get it done in 3 weeks? God help us. Here a a few peeks at the demo, you can check out my Insta stories for walk thru here.
One Room Challenge Week 2
Welcome back to week 2 of the Fall One Room Challenge!
So its been 8 months since our powder room caught fire at my daughters birthday party. For those of you who don't know the scoop on the fire you can catch the whole story here. Besides fire restoration clean up and removing the damaged drywall things have come to a screeching halt. I have a design plan in place, but I'm having the worst time finding a 30" vanity at a relatively reasonable price point that I loveeee. I know what I like and what we can afford, but naturally what I like is never what we can afford!! Also I'm pinching pennies these days since we just remodeled our kitchen, replaced all the floors and all the stucco ceilings on on the first floor. The bathroom is the missing piece to make our remodel complete, so it kind of worked out that we have a good reason to remodel it! No I did not set the powder room on fire on purpose... Im not that crazy despite what my friends may think. Since the main floor is mostly white, I decided to paint the doors leading into the basement and powder room gray. I fell in love with this London Rose wallpaper from Anthropologie years ago and I just happened to grab a roll while I had a 20% off coupon. Man I love it when Anthro has their 20% off days...
Since I tend to lean a little more of the glam side when it comes to my home, I decided to jus things up with this venetian mirror and the prettiest ballerinas prints I ever did see. I hope you like it!
One Room Challenge Fall 2017
Yup, there you have it. My daughters last birthday party went up in flames, literally. My Turkish towel was burnt to a crisp and I vowed to never burn a candle in the bathroom again (but I do still decorate with them, cause I'm a sucker for shiny things) Luckily my super hero mom instincts kicked in and the fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread. No one was hurt or even traumatized by all the smoke. Well except for me... and my bathroom that has been sitting in a half finished state since February. Usually I don't sit on projects for 8 months but I have good reasons for this delay.
Fall Home Finds
October is finally here. The true start of Fall in my books. Which means its time to buy an obnoxious amount of pumpkins for the front porch and hope they don't rot by Halloween. I've been so inspired by this color palette lately so I thought I'd put together a little mood board of all the home finds I have been loving for Fall. I don't know what it is about this cow print from Minted, but he makes me want to join the 4H. Throw in some soft camel leather (hello oxymoron) washed woods and plaid... and you got your self a whole new look for Fall. Happy shopping and thank your for reading!
How to Cozy up Your Home for Fall
Bring on the chunky sweaters, crunchy leaves and pumpkin spice everything. Fall has officially arrived which means my mind is on a constant buzz with with decor ideas for my home. Transitioning your home for the approaching season doesn't have to cost you a fortune. One of my favorite ways to cozy up my home is simply switching out a few accessories with warmer hues and lots of texture. Throw in a few baby pumpkins and bam your cozy oasis awaits. Here are my top 5 ways to help cozy up your home for Fall.
Coastal Cape Cods
Cape Cods have always had a special place in my design heart. When we were just 23 my husband and I purchased a quant little Cape Cod of my dreams. It had dormer windows with planked walls and one tiny bathroom for all to share. It was tiny but it was mine and I loved it! We only lasted there a whooping 4 months before we had to move for work, which in hindsight was probably a good thing since we popped out 2 more kids shortly after. Can you imagine 5 people sharing 1 bathroom?? Umm no thanks. Anyway, ever since we made the move to our now cookie cutter house, I have been yearning for some architectural details in my life. And these Cape Cods do not dissapoint. Shiplap galore, washed wood and white on white details are what my coastal loving dreams are made of. Here are some of my favorite Cape Cod homes of Pinterest lately.
Welcome Home
I'm so excited to share with you the launch of Valerie Wheeler Interiors! For those of you who followed my previous blog...Olde Town Style, thanks so much for sticking with me through all the changes. And for those of you who are brand new to the blog...welcome!! I wanted to share a little recap on how Valerie Wheeler Interiors came to be. During my years as a SAHM my love for interior design really manifested into a full blown obsession. So much so that I decided to go back to school when I was pregnant with my third child to become an interior designer…
May Finds
There is something about May that always has me itching to give my home decor a refresh. Most people start their Spring cleaning in April. Which usually means you get rid of a crap load of stuff that has been cluttering up your home for far too long! Am I the only one who actually physically feels better when you get rid of all of your old stuff?! There something so satisfying about dropping off bags of clothes and old knickknacks at the Good Will. Once the purge is out of the way... its time pick out some new goodies to get your home ready for Spring! I've always had a deep obsession with anything scalloped and pink. So I'm always trying to find subtle ways to add those soft feminine touches to my home without making it over girly. Mixed with white and washed woods these pieces become more elegant rather than "trendy." Speaking of trendy, I've totally jumped on the neutral home bandwagon. I'll admit I was scared to go all white at first with 3 little ones but there is just something so relaxing about coming home to a light & airy space. There are so many ways to mix things up each season if you keep with a mostly neutral backdrop. The shell ginger jar below has been in my shopping cart at Alice Lane for far too long and I'm happy to report that I just treated myself to this beauty and the scalloped bowl to finish off my kitchen. decor! I hope you all enjoy this beautiful weekend and don't spend to much time inside online shopping. Thanks for reading!
How to add a little Spring to your Home
Happy Easter Monday! Is it just me or does Spring Break take way too long to get here and then whiz by way too fast?! I fell off the blogging radar this past month... interior design school tends to take over my life sometimes. But I am happy to report that I am counting down the days until graduation in 4 weeks. After that I will officially become an Interior Designer. I swear I get butterflies every time I say that!! The past 3 years have been a journey to say the least, and I am so thankful for my sweet family, friends and neighbors who have helped me with kids and just life in general when it all gets to be too much. Which is atleast every other month! It really does take a village:) I feel like I have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up and I'm so thankful to be able to share that with all of you on this little corner of the internet! So until my design projects start this summer, I want to keep sharing more updates on my greatest project to date, my home. These are snippets of our life lately as we wrap up the finishing details on our renovation. I hope you can find some inspiration to bring a little bit spring style into your home as well. Basically I just bought a bunch of blooms, books and bunnies. Be sure to check out more of my latest Spring Home finds below. Thanks for reading!!
Marble vs Quartz Part 2
Hello loves! I have been getting a ton of questions on Instagram lately about my countertops and it reminds me that I never did a follow up on my Marble vs Quartz debate (you can read Part 1 of the great debate here). I decided to go with honed Volakas marble from In Home Stone with a Dupont edge. We have been living with it for close to 2 months now and you know what? I FREAKING LOVE IT!!! You CAN live happily with marble... even with three little ones. I swear I had at least 18 different people tell me that I was crazy for wanting marble when I was designing our kitchen. Most of them were fellow design students or contractors. I was so conflicted. I knew I would never be able to recreate the natural beauty of marble with the manufactured quartz. I was just so worried that I would be a freaking psycho about the countertops if we went with Marble. I am happy to report that this has not been the case whatsoever!! Yes I have had my moments, like the time when my husband left the wet bottle of Dawn soap on the counter over night, I might of had some choice words for him the next morning ;) But for the most part even if there is a blemish or a spot on the counters I just wipe it up with warm soapy water and the spot completely fades once it is dry. Not sure if thats the sealant working its magic or if marbles really isn't as fussy as everyone makes her out to be. But its kind of cool to watch the watermarks magically disappear. I do have two rings by the sink but I swear you only notice the if you bent down just right and squint. Not a big deal, right? Here are my tips for taking care of your marble countertops. They're really not as scary as some might think.
London's Love Fest
This week I wanted to share a little party I threw for my youngest, London. She is turning 3 next week and since February is such a crazy month for us, I decided to combine her birthday party with Valentines Day. Target had so many cute decorations this year that it really came together pretty quickly! I already had most of the Valentines decorations up (you can read that post here) so all that was left to do was put together a kid friendly menu and set up the cookie decorating station. Since I knew there would be a few little ones attending, I decided to clear to playroom so they had room to roll and get diapers changed:) Plus it was the perfect floor space for the short lived hot potato game we attempted! The big kids had fun taking pictures with our silly photo props, decorating heart cookies and consuming way too much sugar. All pictures were taken during the quiet before the storm by the lovely Tracy Marshall... and when I say storm I really mean fire! I swear every year we have something catastrophic happen at a birthday party. And this year takes the cake... we actually had a mini house fire when all the guest were arriving! A hand towel in the bathroom had fallen into a candle that I had lit on the sink. The whole entire turkish towel was burnt to a crisp by the time I ran in with the fire extinguisher. Luckily no one was hurt or too spooked by it so we aired out the house and kept the party rolling. It just goes to show that all the party planning in the world is never enough when it comes to throwing kid parties. So please enjoy all the pretty pictures below knowing that my life is and always will be complete chaos. But as long as the kids are happy I'm not complaining:) Thanks for reading and Happy 3rd Birthday to London Joan!
How to add a little Love to your Home
Love is in the air!! How is it already Valentines Day this week? I swear I just put the Christmas tree decorations away. This Valentines Day I went a little overboard. With our kitchen remodel happening right smack dab in the middle of Christmas I feel like I was robbed of my decorating bliss. Literally we only had a tree. Plus February is extra special this year. The love of my life is turning 30, we are finally on the other side of the trenches of motherhood (my baby is turning 3) and my house is 90% finished. So much to be giddy about. So I thought I'd share a little love with my readers and give you some tips on infusing some Valentines Day Style into your home! Here are my go to tips this Valentines Day :
Creating your Dream Closet with Arhaus
Have you ever thought about what your dream closet would look like? I mean really thought about what it would be at the core before all the beautiful clothes and shoes have arrived? I know it sounds crazy to think about a dream closet with out the dream wardrobe, so when Arhaus reached out to me and asked me this same question it got my design juices buzzing.
A dream closet is so much more than a place to get ready in the morning. It is every woman ultimate escape from reality, into a world thats truly our own. Where we are surrounded by beauty and style. Every closet needs more than just clothes. In my dream closet I would be surrounded by beautiful lighting. I have a personal obsession with chandeliers so naturally that would be my go to for illuminating the perfect light in my space. Pendant lights are another great option when selecting lighting to add a touch of glamour. Arhaus currently has a great collection of pendant lighting that would look glamorous in any room!
Next I would need that perfect place to sit and kick off my shoes (Louboutins of course). Here is where I am a little torn, do I do bold and fabulous or soft and femme for seating? Either way I would need an accent bench for my little people to gather around while Mommy gets ready. Is it just me or is it way more fun picking out an outfit when you have a two year old picking out accessories for you? I linked some of my favorite seating options on my Pinterest here.
Now its time for storage. Oh my storage makes me happy in some strange sort of way. I would obviously have to have custom floor to ceiling built ins just for shoes. The back of the shelves would have some fantastic wallpaper or venetian mirrors to reflect light. Because whats a dream closet without tons of natural light? My clothing racks would be color coded because Im OCD like that. Tops on top, skirts then pants... you get the picture. Then I would have to have an accent piece of furniture to store all my diamonds (because this is a dream closet remember?) My accent piece would also have other fun accessories like trays to house my shades and vases for fresh blooms.
