Tips For A Fruitful Indoor Garden

Spring has officially sprung and if you need us, we'll be in our garden! But not all of us are lucky enough to have the space for a lush garden. Maybe your yard is too woodsy, or hilly, or you don't have the space or you may just be indoorsy! But not to worry, we have some tips for how you can still enjoy your home grown herbs and produce without stepping foot into the great outdoors. Keep in mind, you wont be able to grow your own watermelons and pumpkins, we're talking little berries, cherry tomatoes and herbs. But even gardening in your home is rewarding and a great way to unwind and relax!

Location, Location, Location

Now, first things first, you have to find the perfect sunny spot in your home where you can keep your little indoor garden. You want to find a spot that gets a lot a sun, but not so much that your plants will overheat and dry up.

Prep Your Seeds

Unless you're purchasing your plants pre-sprouted, you will need to prep your seeds before transferring to their permanent pots. Our seed kits are a fool proof solution for this step.  Each kit includes starter seeds, peat moss growing media, bio friendly peat pots, and our step-by-step instruction manual. Another way to do this is to buy your seeds from your local nursery and use paper egg cartons to plant your seeds. Once they've sprouted, you can simply plant the whole pod including the egg carton (since the paper is biodegradable) in your larger, permanent pot.

Pick Your Pots

When it comes to indoor plants, we like to use ceramic, plastic, or clay containers for potting our plants. You'll want to make sure your pot has a drainage hole at the bottom along with a drain tray. The drainage hole will allow your plants to drain and not flood itself and the tray will keep your home clean and mess free.  These terracotta pots from Le Fleur Farms and Home are perfect. We offer several sizes and the cute details along the rim act as decor in your home.

Take Care

Keeping your plants alive and thriving can be a full time job, but it doesn't have to be! We love using the Planta app for all things plant care. You simply log your house plants/ produce into the app, answer several questions about each plant like about it's location, size, and current state and the app tells you exactly how often it needs to be watered and tips for how to keep your plants healthy and happy! It then alerts you when your plants need to be attended to. Technology, man. Gotta love it.
